John Parker On the Road... As Seen Through His LG Mobile Phone
Jamie Bestwick Jamie Bestwick, some people argue, is the best thing that ever happened to vert riding. And they don't just mean on bikes.

He rides a ramp the way it was meant to be ridden, from end to end in both directions, carving it like a Christmas turkey, in smooth, flowing slices. His airs are head high on his first hit and get bigger from there. He was the first rider to do a fast plant flair, the first to do a smith grind to barspin and, in 2003, he became the first to pull a tailwhip flair.

According to legend, Jamie has been this good for over a decade, but he was stuck in England, working a regular job, so nobody took any notice.

In 1998, Jamie was working for an aerospace company, repairing compression engines. It was a good job, steady, but it allowed him very little time to ride.

"I had to coordinate days off with competitions. I was calling in a lot of sickies."

Jamie BestwickIt was a tough decision for him, but, in 1999, he quit his job and moved to Woodward, Pennsylvania, where he started his career as a full time athlete. Things started happening for him right away. That year, he won the Gravity Games. And again, in 2001. In 2002, he won eight gold medals, including the Australian Planet X Games. And in 2003, he won Global X and the X Games.

Jamie is serious about competition. He doesn't do drugs and he has a rigorous training schedule that includes power yoga before every big comp. However, he is not selfish about his victories.

"I try to pace myself throughout the year," he says. "The more people do well, the more people get sponsorships and then, we can all ride our bikes."

In addition to BMX, Jamie also studies photography and collects Star Wars memorabilia. His wife Kerry is a Pilates instructor.
